Thoughts from a hospice social worker

When you get a group of knowledgeable and caring people working together to serve the needs of others, you find extraordinary delivery of health care specialties. When you take health care specialties and combine them with a welcoming resident and family atmosphere, concern for individual preference, dignity, and support of spirituality – you find Libby’s House. Watching them grow as an organization, expand services, and continually evaluate quality for ongoing improvements has been a pleasure of mine, personally and professionally. It has truly been an honor to collaborate jointly with them in providing my end of life care specialty to some of their residents. This enables their residents, if needed, to remain where they are familiar and comfortable at such a meaningful time in their lives and the lives of their families’. Working and living within the Plymouth community makes me fully aware and grateful for the services Libby’s House provides to our area.

Frankie Visits Libby's House

Every month Barbara Techel and her 10-year-old daschund Frankie visit with the residents of Libby’s House as part of our therapeutic programming. Frankie is paralyzed in her hind quarters as a result of an injury. But, she does not allow her physical challenges limit her purpose or her gift of healing to others. Custom-fitted for a doggie wheelchair (dog cart), Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Therapy Dog uses her disability to bring a message of hope and encouragement to young and old.

Visiting Libby’s House once a month has opened Barbara’s heart and eyes to realizing that people may not always understand what seniors are going through, and all they want is someone to listen and spend time with them. Earlier this year the staff of Libby’s House were honored to learn that Barbara had released her second book, Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Therapy Dog Visits Libby’s House.

This book is a true story told from a therapy dog’s viewpoint. This, the second book in the series, tells how Frankie became a registered therapy dog and gives several personal accounts of her visits to the residents of Libby’s House.

“All one needs to do is see the expression in the eyes of those Frankie touches to know she is tangible love,” says Christine Thill, owner and RN administrator of Libby’s House. “When the body fails, the spirit soars! Frankie’s visits along with Barb’s gentle nature are a true blessing to Libby’s House.”

Because she is bringing positive awareness to animals with disabilities through her therapy dog work, Frankie was awarded the Wisconsin Pet Hall of Fame Companion and is the official mascot for National Disabled Pets Day. This little dog teaches us that patience, listening, and understanding opens our hearts to what matters most—love.

Children are invited to follow Frankie, The Walk ‘N Roll Dog’s adventures on Frankie's Blog: frankietherocknrolldog.blog. Adults will find more information about caring for special needs animals on Barbara’s blog at joyfulpaws.typepad.com. To purchase any of Barbara’s books, please visit joyfulpaws.com
