Therapeutic Programming / Activities

Libby's House concept of "activities" is better defined as therapeutic events which focus on engaging the mind, body, and spirit in social settings as well as independently. We recognize people as spirits in unison with the world around them. As they are physically connected by flesh, the mind and spirit are intangible parts of the whole person. That means we cannot affect one part without affecting another. An example would be: if a person cannot follow the words of a story, but are soothed by the sound of a voice and holding a hand, would you not still read to them?

We explore who people were in their early years and what were their interests, hobbies, occupation, experiences and bring that to where they are now. We look to engage residents' interests with their current abilities. Rather than an "I cannot do this anymore" outlook, we embrace "how can I modify what I enjoy so I can still partake?" We also explore what a person may yet wish to try! Our residents become very open to trying something different when in a lighthearted, non-threatening atmosphere.

Our activities calendar is driven by the interests of the residents. In community living, success is based on the participants. We always ask for ideas or feedback when developing their social interactions. Our homes may have different activity calendars based on the interests of the residents living in that particular community.

To enhance spirituality, we offer non-denominational daily devotions . Specific practices such as praying the rosary, video based worship services, communion etc. are offered. Several local Pastors and Ministers offer monthly worship services in our homes.

Music is a universal pleasure. A variety of music is played throughout the community on our sound system. We celebrate further with sing-a-longs, hymns, playing instruments and watching concerts. We embrace every opportunity to bring live music to our residents. The ability to relate to and appreciate music is one of the most enduring cognitive skills for those with memory impairment.

We start each day off with a vibrant exercise group called Fitness First, which includes a host of stretching and weight lifting techniques that promote safe and healthy living. Whether one can touch their toes or the end of their nose, it gets the blood going and we see marked improvement in overall well-being. A favorite of many residents is the daily walking club. Handrails throughout our community help keep those who are a little unsteady on their feet safe while walking. Often our more independent residents help push those in wheelchairs, making everyone feel involved and appreciated. The walking club is a social event for all.

Sensory activities sharpen the basic senses. Recalling aromas, defining different feelings, recognizing musical tones, looking through reminisce books and thematic bins and of course everyone's favorite-taste!

Mind-stimulating games and activities are offered which focus on numbers, utilize critical thinking skills, improve recollection and challenge the minds of our residents. There are many old favorites such as bingo and Yahtzee and some newer games that assist in keeping minds sharp. We read literary classics and poetry, and current events (local and world) are viewed every day. All activities are presented, adjusted and modified to engage our residents, help assure success, and avoid frustration.

Life Skills such as baking, folding laundry and even setting the table are encouraged.

One-on-One time is when our resident assistants spend quality time doing those specific things a resident enjoys or needs without the presence of other residents. It varies from day-to-day, and if you ask our resident assistants, it is THEIR favorite aspect of their roles at Libby's House.

Pet Therapy is offered monthly. Barb Techel and Frankie, the Walk N'Roll therapy dog, are frequent visitors and beloved friends of the residents. Check out Frankie and read her latest book involving her visits to Libby's House!

Throughout the year seasonal activities are scheduled. A copy of the calendar is available upon request.

If you have ideas or know of people willing to share their time and talents with our residents, please call 920-892-8324 or email us. We believe in intergenerational community and welcome all persons to Libby's House.
